Award winning broadcaster and entrepreneur Mick Gillispie is renowned through his work with the Chicago Cubs and Alabama Crimson Tide. He is the owner and President of Mick Broadcasting and Production and Vice President of the Knoxville Smokies Baseball Team.
Mick Broadcasting and Production produces the syndicated Bama Tailgate Show which airs on radio across Alabama and the Florida Panhandle on GameDays. The Tailgate show is #1 in the Birmingham/Tuscaloosa Markets airing on the Tide Flagship Station. Mick is joined by 2015 Alabama National Championship Quarterback Jake Coker. The show brings lighthearted humor and an incisive vibe to the football Saturdays.
Mick has been part of the Chicago Cubs organization since the 2006 season. He is the Vice President of Broadcasting and Baseball Media for the Knoxville Smokies. Gillispie has anchored the play-by-play on the broadcast which includes local radio and digital media on the MLB & Bally’s Sports Apps. Mick Broadcasting & Production partners with the Smokies to produce the game broadcasts. For his efforts, in 2017, Gillispie earned Ballpark Digest’s Broadcaster of the Year award after being a runner-up for the award three years running: in 2013, 2012 and 2011. The award covers all of Minor League Baseball both affiliated and independent Leagues He also won the award Southern League Broadcaster of the Year in 2010, voted on by peers and colleagues. He From 2011-2019 seasons, Gillispie handled play-by-play and produced Chicago Cubs’ spring training games on MLB.com, Mick was also a contributor to CSN-Chicago where his interviews, play-by-play calls and packages have been routinely featured. Before the Marquee Sports Network Mick’s reports aired regularly on WGN-America as part of the Cubs Leadoff Man show. He has been a panelist during the Cubs Conventions and hosted other related events.
Mick has be seen on the SEC Network an ESPN subsidiary broadcasting games. This includes covering sports and events such as Mens Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Gymnastics, Soccer and Volleyball.
Before joining The Tennessee Smokies, he served in 2005/2006 as part of the broadcast team of the Chattanooga Lookouts. Gillispie also called games for the Salem Avalanche (Class A Carolina League) in 2004 where he constructed a five-station broadcast network. He launched his on-air broadcast career calling play-by-play in 2003 for the Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plains League). There he constructed the ‘Gold Leaf Radio Network’ that boasted the leagues only full season coverage. He inked a 25,000 watt flagship station and sold airtime to pay for the successful venture.
As a graduate of the University of Alabama, his professional broadcasting career began as a student at the Capstone, when Gillispie became a reporter with “All Things Considered” for Alabama Public Radio’s nightly news. He then shifted to sports at campus radio station WVUA 90.7, as an on-air personality and producer of various programs, sports and events—including coverage of Alabama baseball, football and Olympic sports. Ultimately, as Sports Director for the station, he reorganized the non-profit outlet to glory, where it earned 23 regional and national broadcast awards. Mick has stayed involved with the station by hosting broadcast educational forums the last four years and received an honorarium for his effort.
Mick is also proudly involved in community service including the National Rotary Club, Elks Club and the American Legion. He is also part of the World Famous FloraBama International Mullet Toss Broadcast.
