About Mick

Veteran broadcaster Mick Gillispie is renowned through his work with the Chicago Cubs. Since the 2011 season, Gillispie has handled play-by-play and produced Chicago Cubs’ spring training games on MLB.com, teaming with Cubs TV commentator Len Kasper. Mick was also a contributor to CSN-Chicago where his interviews, play-by-play calls and packages were routinely featured. He also had reports aired regularly on WGN-America as part of the Cubs Leadoff Man show and was a panelist during the last six Cubs Conventions.

College Football fans in Alabama recognize Mick as host of the very popular ‘Tide Tailgate Show’ and ‘Tide Post Game Live’. The pre-game and post-game shows accompany Alabama Crimson Tide football on the official Flagship radio station. The broadcast crew which includes former All-Americans and National Champions followed the team all the way to the 2015 & 2017 National Championships.

In addition, he has been heard on the University of Alabama Crimson Tide Sports Network, including the broadcast of Alabama Baseball during the 2010 Regional and Super Regional. Gillispie voiced the 2011 5-hour Energy men’s collegiate basketball tournament in Puerto Rico and subsequently joined the University of Alabama team in 2012 in Cincinnati. In all, Gillispie has voiced basketball, baseball, football pre/post game shows, volleyball and acted as a back-up broadcast engineer for countless other events. He is a contributor to Tide102.9 radio in Tuscaloosa, and a show host and play-by-play broadcaster of Tuscaloosa County High Football.

Mick can be seen on the SEC Network an ESPN subsidiary broadcasting games. This includes covering sports and events such as Mens Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Gymnastics, Soccer and Volleyball.

 Mick has worked with the Cubs Double-A affiliate for over twelve seasons and was awarded the 2017 Minor League Broadcaster of the Year by Ballpark Digest. He is the Director of Broadcasting and the familiar voice of Knoxville-based Minor League Baseball team The Tennessee Smokies. Gillispie has anchored the East Tennessee airwaves on power-house flagship WNML (The Sports Animal).  Commandeering play-by-play for the Smokies Radio Network, he also manages its broadcast staff and oversees the on-air product from intro music to the closing billboard… and everything in between. Before being awarded 2017 Broadcaster of the Year award he was honorable mention for the award in 20132012 and 2011. The award covers all of Minor League Baseball both affiliated and independent Leagues He also won the award Southern League Broadcaster of the Year in 2010, voted on by peers and colleagues.

Before joining The Tennessee Smokies, he served in 2005/2006 as part of the broadcast team of the Chattanooga Lookouts. Gillispie also called games for the Salem Avalanche (Class A Carolina League) in 2004 where he constructed a five-station broadcast network. He launched his on-air broadcast career calling play-by-play  in 2003 for the Wilson Tobs (Coastal Plains League). There he constructed the ‘Gold Leaf Radio Network’ that boasted the leagues only full season coverage. He inked a 25,000 watt flagship station and sold airtime to pay for the successful venture.

As a graduate of the University of Alabama, his professional broadcasting career began as a student at the Capstone, when Gillispie became a reporter with “All Things Considered” for Alabama Public Radio’s nightly news. He then shifted to sports at campus radio station WVUA 90.7, as an on-air personality and producer of various programs, sports and events—including coverage of Alabama baseball, football and Olympic sports. Ultimately, as Sports Director for the station, he reorganized the non-profit outlet to glory, where it earned 23 regional and national broadcast awards. Mick has stayed involved with the station by hosting broadcast educational forums the last four years and received an honorarium for his effort.
